Ar-Rahim — The Bestower of Mercy: الرَّحِيمُ
Meaning
Mercy directed and sustained toward its recipients — paired with Ar-Rahman in the Basmalah and in 1:3. Where Ar-Rahman stresses the vastness of mercy itself, Ar-Rahim stresses its constant bestowal, especially upon the believers (cf. 33:43).
Textual references
- Qur’an 1:3
- Qur’an 2:163
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Notice the pairing: vastness (Rahman) joined to nearness (Rahim) — hope without presumption.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
