How the Qibla direction is found
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca from wherever you are standing. On a globe, the shortest path between two points is a great-circle arc, so the bearing is not simply “south-east” or a fixed compass point. It changes with latitude and longitude. This page calculates that initial great-circle bearing from your coordinates to the Kaaba at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E and displays it in degrees clockwise from true north. The same coordinates feed the prayer times calculator, which turns them into a daily schedule.
You can locate yourself with the browser’s location permission or keep the page open while you move. The map draws a violet line toward the Kaaba and the dial shows the bearing. If your device exposes compass heading data, the dial can also indicate the turn needed to face the Qibla; without a sensor, the numeric bearing and map still work. A physical compass can be used alongside the displayed bearing.
Accuracy depends on the coordinates you provide. A coarse network location can be hundreds of metres or several kilometres away, while a precise GPS fix is much closer. The page reports the browser’s stated accuracy rather than guaranteeing it. Magnetic compass readings can also be affected by nearby metal and electronics, so treat the live heading as guidance and verify with a known reference when precision matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for this page to calculate your bearing. The finder uses the browser location permission to establish your origin and does not offer a manual coordinate entry. If permission is denied or no usable fix is available, the page cannot produce a direction. A map and numeric bearing appear once a valid location is accepted.
Yes. The numeric bearing and map work from coordinates alone, so the page is usable on a desktop or a phone without heading data. The live compass dial appears only after the device supplies a genuine orientation event. Without that sensor, use the displayed degrees with a physical compass or a known landmark.
Phone compasses can be affected by nearby metal, magnets, electronics, and calibration drift. The page uses the heading your browser reports; it does not guarantee a corrected magnetic bearing. If the dial jumps or disagrees with the map, move away from interference, recalibrate the device, and compare the numeric bearing with a physical compass.
The calculated bearing is referenced to true north. A phone compass heading may be reported as true or magnetic depending on the device and browser, and this page does not apply a universal declination correction. Treat the compass as a guide, use the degree value and map as the reference, and allow for local magnetic variation when navigating.
