Al-Malik — The King, the Sovereign: الْمَلِكُ
Meaning
Absolute, perfect ownership and authority — needing nothing, disposing of all. In 59:23 it stands among the names revealed together; 20:114 calls Him "the True King." Unlike human kingship, His rule lacks need, fatigue, or rival.
Textual references
- Qur’an 59:23
- Qur’an 20:114
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Human authority borrows; His owns. Measure every lesser power against this one.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
