Ar-Rahman — The Most Merciful: الرَّحْمَـنُ
Meaning
The intensive form of mercy: all-encompassing compassion that embraces all creation, prior to and independent of human merit. Classical scholars distinguish it from Ar-Rahim by scope — Rahman is mercy universal in reach, as in the opening of nearly every surah.
Textual references
- Qur’an 1:3
- Qur’an 55:1
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Begin acts consciously — the Basmalah pairs this name with Allah first, framing mercy as the context of everything that follows.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
