Al-Waliyy — The Protecting Guardian: الْوَلِيُّ
Meaning
Close, managing guardianship over the believers — 2:257: "Allah is the guardian of those who believe, bringing them out of darkness into light." Against Al-Wali (#77, the Governor): Waliyy stresses loving nearness and alliance; Wali, administering authority.
Textual references
- Qur’an 2:257
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Alliance has obligations: loyalty to the Guardian in light and darkness.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
