Al-Hafiz — The Preserver: الْحَفِيظُ
Meaning
Guarding that neither tires nor lapses — 11:57: "my Lord is guardian over all things." Against Al-Muhaymin (#7, overseeing protector) and Ar-Raqib (#43, watchful witness): Hafiz stresses safekeeping of what is entrusted, including the Qur’an itself (15:9).
Textual references
- Qur’an 11:57
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Entrust anxieties explicitly — hifz is this name’s daily employment.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
