Al-Ghafur — The All-Forgiving: الْغَفُورُ
Meaning
Forgiveness complete in scope — covering all sins for the one who turns. 2:173 ("Allah is Forgiving, Merciful") and dozens of closings pair it with mercy. Against Al-Ghaffar (#14, repetition): Ghafur stresses the totality embraced; Ghaffar, the return accepted again and again.
Textual references
- Qur’an 2:173
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Despair about "too much" sin contradicts this name directly; return instead.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
