Al-Qayyum — The Self-Subsisting Sustainer: الْقَيُّومُ
Meaning
Self-standing and upholding all else — the pair of Al-Hayy in 2:255. Scholars (notably Ibn Taymiyyah) call these two the greatest name’s candidates: all other names presuppose One who lives perfectly and sustains absolutely.
Textual references
- Qur’an 2:255
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Self-sufficiency is His alone; every claim of it elsewhere is confusion.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
