Al-Afuww — The Pardoner: الْعَفُوُّ
Meaning
Pardon that erases, not merely forgives — 22:60: "Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving." Scholars distinguish: Ghafur covers the sin, Afuww wipes its trace. The Laylat al-Qadr supplication (Tirmidhi 3513) asks by this name: "You love to pardon, so pardon me."
Textual references
- Qur’an 22:60
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Ask not only forgiveness but erasure — by the name taught for the Night of Decree.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
