Al-Mumit — The Bringer of Death: الْمُمِيتُ
Meaning
The One who decrees death — the pair of Al-Muhyi (#60). 3:156 and 15:23 ascribe giving life and death to Him jointly. Remembered not for morbidity but proportion: finitude clarifies what infinitude (His life, #62) means.
Textual references
No direct verse ascription for this exact name-form is established — the name is contemplated via the classical listing and related texts noted in Sources. This uncertainty is stated rather than filled.
The 99-names hadith itself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677) does not enumerate the names; the enumeration order follows the Tirmidhi listing, whose chain scholars grade as weak for the list itself.
Reflection
Remembering the Appointed end orders the unappointed days.
A personal contemplation aid — not doctrine and not a promised outcome.
Sources & methodology
- Qur’an 3:156; 15:23 (life and death jointly ascribed — see methodology)
